Once you've found a course you're interested in, we recommend attending one or more Open days to learn more about studying that course at SRUC.

Once you know what you're interested in studying at SRUC, you should attend an Open day to learn more about it and decide if it's the course you want to apply for. Open days are a great way to get a taste of what a particular course, subject, or campus is like. We recommend that everyone considering applying to SRUC attend at least one open day.

Many of our courses are offered at more than one campus and each campus is unique. If the course or subject you're interested in is offered in multiple campuses, we recommend attending an open day at each campus to get a feel for what it will be like to study there. 

If you have a disability or additional needs, it's important to attend an open day at any campus you're considering so you can get a good understanding of the specific accessibility and facilities available to meet your requirements. 

Open days are held regularly throughout the year. Some are on-campus and some are online. You can find a full list of all our up-coming Open days on our Open Days pages under the News and Events menu. You can register for any Open day event using the 'Book now' link on the event listing there. You can register for as many Open days as you want. Once you do, you will receive a confirmation email from our marketing team. You will also get a reminder email from them closer to the day of the Open day event and a follow-up email after the day to request your feedback.

Entry requirements

Before applying, make sure you meet or are likely to meet the entry requirements for your chosen course. These will be listed on the course page in our course catalogue. We also have dedicated entry requirements pages that gives general academic and physical requirements for our courses as well as explains the wide variety of comparable and alternative qualifications we accept such as maturity, work experience, and motivation which are recognised as alternatives to formal qualifications wherever possible. SRUC also accepts a wide range of access-level and non-standard qualifications.

If you are an international student, you may have also some additional entry requirements like validation of your current qualifications and proof of competence in written and spoken English.

How to apply

How to apply to study at SRUC will be different depending on what course you are applying for, but we have broken down all the steps you'll need to take by course type on our application instructions page. We also have a dedicated application FAQ page to answer common application questions. 

If you have a disability or additional needs and need your application in a different format or would like specific assistance when applying to SRUC, contact our admissions team who will be more than happy to help or refer you to the right specialist support you need. Asking for extra help or disclosing any disability during the application process will not affect whether or not you are accepted at SRUC.

We process and respond to all applications on a rolling basis. 

If you're accepted in your chosen course, you will receive a conditional or unconditional offer from us. You will also hear from us if you have not been accepted in the course you applied for. 

Unconditional offers

If you receive an unconditional offer, this means you have already met all the entrance requirements for the course. We will let you know if we need any proof of your qualifications.

Conditional offers

If you receive a conditional offer, this means that we have made you an offer that depends on certain conditions. We'll let you know what conditions those are. Usually you must get certain grades in your forthcoming exams but they may also be other requirements such as financial, medical, or English language conditions that you must meet before the start of the course.

Rejected applications

If your application to an SRUC course was rejected, it may be because you didn't meet the entry requirements or because we no longer have space available on that course. You're welcome to get in touch with us to discuss your options or to apply for another course of study with us.

If SRUC are able to offer you a place on the course you have applied to, you will receive an invitation to attend an applicant day. These are specifically designed to help you make a more informed decision.

We realise that some applicants will already have attended an SRUC open day. However, applicant days will provide more detailed course information, including interactive activities that will give you the opportunity to be a SRUC student for a short while. You will also have more time to meet with staff and students involved with the course and the wider student experience.

Applicant days take place in March and April. You will receive an invitation by post with more information.

If there isn’t an applicant event for your course, or you applied too late and missed it – don’t worry – we have more Open days on-campus throughout the year to make sure you have the chance to come and see us in person and get any questions answered.

If you have not applied yet to SRUC or didn't get the results you were expecting after applying or accepting an offer made by SRUC but want to study with us this year, you're welcome to apply via clearing. 

We'll publish a list of our courses available for clearing in June or July every year. We'll update them regularly and remove courses as they fill up. You can still find our full course list in our course catalogue. 

To apply for any course during clearing, click on the apply or enquire link on the clearing page for course you're interested in. You can't apply to clearing spaces through our course catalogue.

Our admissions team will process your application and respond as quickly as possible to let you know if you've been offered a place on an SRUC course.

Not all SRUC students will need accommodation, but if you do, you'll need to apply for it as soon as possible after accepting your offer. 

SRUC has access to a range of accommodation available for students, either on campus or in the local area.

On-campus accommodation

SRUC halls of residence are at Elmwood (undergoing consultation), Oatridge and Barony campuses. To apply to live at any of these halls of residence, you will need to fill out the student accommodation form and return it to the Residential Manager for the campus you wish to live at. Their contact details as well as accommodation details and costs are explained on this form.

SRUC's Craibstone campus has entered into an agreement with the University of Aberdeen to offer our students a range of accommodation options at the Hillhead Student Village. Students are also welcome to utilise any other accommodation options available throughout the city of Aberdeen and the surrounding areas. 

There are a number of student accommodation options for those attending the SRUC King's Building campus in Edinburgh. Alternatively, many students choose to rent accommodation within the city's private rental sector. Edinburgh has a large student population and a large rental market, so finding a room to rent as part of a flat-share, or even a flat to rent alone, is rarely a problem.

Letting us know of your disability or additional needs before applying to any course of study at SRUC is highly recommended because it gives us more time to investigate any reasonable adjustments to course content, assessment or facilities we can make. Disclosing any disability during the application process will not affect whether or not you are accepted at SRUC.

Once you've accepted your offer from SRUC, please get in touch as soon as possible to let us know of your disability or additional support requirements, health and mobility concerns, or mental health issues, whether or not you've told us about them before. You are also encouraged to let us know if you suspect you have a disability, even if you are not sure. In this case, we can help you with both assessment and support.

Please also let us know if you are care experienced or have caring responsibilities.

We have a dedicated support team but our aim is to have all students feel confident to approach any member of staff if they are worried, distressed or in difficulty of any form. All information will be given due respect and attention and will be acted on as appropriate. 

SRUC is experienced in working with students who tell us about a disability, health condition or additional support need. We help students who disclose:

• A learning difference like dyslexia, dyspraxia or AD(H)D;
• A visual impairment such as blindness or partial sight;
• A hearing impairment such as deafness or partial hearing;
• A long-term illness or health condition which may involve pain or cause fatigue, loss of concentration or breathing difficulties – including any effects from taking associated medication;
• A mental health condition, challenge or disorder such as anxiety or depression;
• A social, behavioural or communication impairment like an autistic spectrum condition or Tourette’s syndrome;
• A physical impairment or challenges with mobility such as climbing stairs or uneven surfaces, or dexterity such as using a keyboard or laboratory equipment;
• Other conditions or impairments that have a substantial and long-term adverse effect on your ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

International students may need a visa to come the the UK to study.

• Student visa: To attend a full-time course for longer than six months, you must apply for a student visa. 
  
  
• Standard Visitor visa: For stays less than six months, you should apply for a Standard Visitor Visa.
  
  
• EU Settlement Scheme: If you have 'settled' or 'pre-settled' status under the EU settlement scheme, you don't need a visa but you will need to send us a share code to prove your right to study in the UK.
   
• Irish citizens: Irish citizens are not subject to immigration control and do not need a visa to study in the UK.

International students who have successfully completed an undergraduate or master's degree qualify for the graduate immigration route which gives you permission to live and work in the UK for two years. Students who complete their PhD will be able to stay for three years.

We know that getting your diary in order early on is important. 

Term dates:

Term starts for most of our students in the week beginning Monday 4 September with Welcome Week. A small number of courses start earlier.

Teaching for most of our higher education /on-campus students will begin in the week beginning Monday 11 September.

You will need to complete SRUC registration to gain access to the MySRUC app, which will give you access to your own timetable. Whilst you are studying with us you can access your programme specific timetable at any time via a link on the MySRUC app, which is free for SRUC students.

As part of the registration process, you will be required to read a number of SRUC policies that you need to follow while an SRUC student. You will need to tick a box during your online registration process to declare that you have read them and will abide by them. 

These policies are:

To become a fully registered student of SRUC, you must register online. We have a dedicated page on our website to explain in detail how to do this. 

You must do this every year before the start of your programme of study.

Logging in

As a new student, you will first be sent an email that will have your log in details to the SRUC Portal where you will complete your registration. This email will also include a link to the portal. Please don’t attempt to register until you have received this email as it will not be successful and you will get an error message. 

Your email will be sent to you at least two weeks before you start your course, provided we have confirmation that you have accepted your offer to study that course at SRUC and you have met any conditions necessary.

Once you receive this email from us, please complete your registration as soon as possible so we can create your student card and make arrangements for you to have access to your timetable.

Registration Process

After you have logged in to the SRUC portal, you will can complete your registration. The registration process includes a number of parts. These include

• Declarations (expected behaviours whilst a student at SRUC)
• Your personal details
• Details about how your programme will be paid for
• Consent details (how we may use your personal data)
• Uploading a photo

Everyone at SRUC is provided with an Outlook email account, which is an application in Office365. By using Office365 you are able to access your emails from any device at any time.

Your student email account will be valid for the duration of your study at SRUC. As an SRUC student, you are expected to check your SRUC emails regularly as we will use this for communicating with you.

SRUC students are entitled to a matriculation card that shows you are a student at SRUC. There are two types of cards available to students. The first is a small plastic digitally capable card (matriculation card) that shows your image and you study details but is also digitally linked to SRUC campus systems such as the photocopiers and the lapsafe system which allows you to borrow laptops whilst on campus.

Additionally, SRUC offers a new digital ID card on your phone - intended to complement your matriculation card, and which can be used as an alternative in many situations but it does not link to Campus systems such as the photocopier or the lapsafe system.

Once you have registered as an SRUC student, you will be able to download the phone-based digital ID card through the mySRUC App. Your plastic matriculation card will be given or sent to you when it is printed out.

SRUC takes a blended learning approach to delivery of its programme of study. This means our programmes follow a mix of on campus and online activities. This allows us to focus on campus activities on active and interactive learning.

To make sure you have all the resources and support you need to take part in online teaching and to excel, we ask that all students complete our IT assessment form every year. If you have additional needs, We recommend that you are supported to complete this form by an appropriate person (e.g. parent/carer/school etc.)

We'll use the information you provide to make sure you have all the computer and digital equipment and programmes you need for your course and to provide you with anything you're missing.

Depending on your course, you may need to order or purchase personal protection equipment (PPE).

Please note:

• Further education students must purchase their PPE through the Guthries website. 
• Higher education students can purchase their PPE through Guthries or they can supply their own PPE.
• All further education programme items and bulk or one size fits all items (such as earplugs, gloves, hair nets, coveralls etc) will be delivered to your campus and distributed to you from there. All items purchased through Guthries for personal use, and for higher education programmes will be posted to your home address.
• If you are purchasing boiler suits, they are likely to be blue and not green.

SRUC Aberdeen students only

SRUC provides a shuttle bus transfer from Aberdeen centre to our Craibstone estate campus. This service is free to all SRUC students. 

If you would like to take advantage of this service, you must apply for it using our Craibstone campus coach transport form.

If you are paying your own tuition fees or have a sponsor to pay your tuition fees, you must fill out a Statement of tuition fee liability form before starting your course at SRUC.

If you are bringing your own car to campus, you will need a parking permit. To obtain one, fill in our student parking application form.

This student parking application form applies to those wishing to park at any campus except SRUC King's Buildings, Edinburgh. If you are intending to park at SRUC Edinburgh campus, you will need to obtain permission to do so by emailing facultyofficeedinburgh@sruc.ac.uk instead of filling out this application form.

You are strongly encouraged to register with a local medical practice and/or dentist, who can give help, advice and support on all health related matters including health promotion issues, contraception, alcohol, drugs, HIV/AIDS issues, and stress.

If you are not sure about something or need help registering, please contact your campus' Education Office. They can also provide you with an HC1 form to apply for help with paying for NHS costs. Their contact information is also on our health and wellbeing contact information page.

After you have completed registration, you will go through another process called induction. While registration was mainly focused on getting your paperwork in order so that you can study at SRUC, induction is mainly focused on getting you physically and mentally prepared to begin your studies with us.

Induction takes place online as well as in-person. 

Online induction activities

Your online induction programme will consist of three things which will all take place on Moodle, our online learning platform:

1. Moodle will be used for your course programme delivery, so as part of induction, the first thing you'll want to do is make sure you can log in to Moodle. Log in using your SRUC username and password.

3. Finally, you'll use Moodle to complete the interactive Induction and Student Guide, which consists of six sections including a 'key information' lesson and 'further information' resource designed to help you start your studies in the best way possible.

Welcome Week will provide you with campus and programme-based inductions run by your Programme Team Leaders and Academic Liaison Managers as well as offering a programme of other events run by your Students’ Association.

A key part of the student experience at SRUC is the time spent outside the classroom. SRUCSA, our Students' Association, offers a wide range of student-led clubs and societies, to make sure your free time is as enjoyable as the time spent in the classrooms. They work to ensure that you have the best possible student experience by engaging with you, representing you to SRUC, and promoting communication between staff and students.

By becoming a Student at SRUC you are automatically a member of SRUCSA. So while you're studying at SRUC, we hope you'll participate in the online and in-person events they run all year.

You might also like to become involved as a voluntary liberation officer, start your own sports club or society, or attend a student panel.

Study at SRUC is via blended learning, so  you'll be studying both online and in-person. This means it's important to make sure your IT is working properly and you're getting the most out of your digital resources. 

Before starting at SRUC, you should have already completed the IT assessment form, set up multi-factor authentication, and confirmed that you can log in and use Moodle but there are a number of other IT programmes and systems you will use during your studies which may need to be set up or get help for.

We have set up a dedicated IT support webpage with information and instructions on how to set up, access, and use your digital accounts and resources including your student account, student email account, saving your files on OneDrive, on-campus printing, WiFi, and beneficial mobile apps (including the MySRUC app). 

Necessary IT programmes & systems

There are a number of IT programmes & systems that you will need to be able to use in order to study at SRUC. 

• Moodle: Our online learning platform.
  
  
• Mahara: A learning portfolio resource.
  
  
• Microsoft Office (Microsoft 365): A suite of applications including Outlook (email) and Word (word processing).
  
  
• Microsoft Teams: A messaging app.
  
  
• Kaltura: A virtual classroom programme that SRUC uses for online learning.
  
  
• Student Desktop: A programme that allows you to log in from home and have the same experience as working on an SRUC desktop machine.
  
  
• Virtual PC: A programme similar to the student desktop but for all the software you may  need but takes up too digital resource on the student desktop.

Getting more help

At SRUC, our IT support team is called SSD (Shared Service Delivery). They are available to help you with a wide range of issues and a great resource to use if you have any questions -from simple to complex, about using your technology.

We are committed to providing an accessible and inclusive study environment where everyone gets the support they need.

You are welcome to tell us about your support needs at any time. 

If you have specific academic support needs that you are aware of, we encourage you will tell us about them as early as possible so that we can help as soon as possible in your academic career. We are experienced in working with students who tell us about a disability, health condition or additional support need including those who disclose:

• a learning difference like dyslexia, dyspraxia or AD(H)D;
• a visual impairment such as blindness or partial sight;
• a hearing impairment such as deafness or partial hearing;
• a long-term illness or health condition which may involve pain or cause fatigue, loss of concentration or breathing difficulties – including any effects from taking associated medication;
• a mental health condition, challenge or disorder such as anxiety or depression;
• a social, behavioural or communication impairment like an autistic spectrum condition or Tourette’s syndrome;
• a physical impairment or challenges with mobility such as climbing stairs or uneven surfaces, or dexterity such as using a keyboard or laboratory equipment;
• other conditions or impairments that have a substantial and long-term adverse effect on your ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

If you're struggling academically and aren't sure why or what your support needs are, you are also encouraged to speak with us. We can help you assess you needs and help put in place the adjustments and support you need to succeed. You will find the SRUC community in general and and our staff's attitude and response positive and friendly. An interview can be arranged in order to identify your individual needs and assess any adjustments and support you may require.

SRUC can also assist with the process of applying for additional financial help under the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). 

SRUC student support teams

We have a dedicated Student Support team at each campus but our aim is to have all students feel confident to approach any member of staff if they are worried, distressed or in difficulty of any form. All information will be given due respect and attention and will be acted on as appropriate.
