Overview & what's involved

This award at Level 5 consolidates knowledge and skills of being in forest and outdoor spaces and supports the learner in developing the learning of others. The approach to learning is to focus on the person holistically within the forest and outdoor environment for their mutual benefit.

Health and Safety in the forest environment
Ecology, seasons, lifecycles and habitats
ID Skills – Flora and fauna
Introduction to fire lighting
Conservation skills
Tool use, safety, and maintenance
Effective use of knots and cord
Creating items from natural materials
Supporting others in a range of woodland-based activities

Course dates:
Start date: 6 January 2025 (online, self-paced study from this date)
On campus dates: 2-5 February 2025
End date: 30 April 2025 (portfolio submission end of March)

Entry requirements

Literacy SCQF Level 4 or Level 5 or Forest and Outdoor Learning Skills at Level 4

Full description

This course involves 50 national learning hours + 3 full days on campus (SRUC Barony) + self-directed study and portfolio submission. Certification on successful completion by: Newbattle Abbey College
