SRUC offers a suite of courses designed for an easy transition between school and college/university, available to pupils in S4, S5 and S6. These courses have flexible delivery methods and a clear progression route for pupils, parents and teaching professionals.

Principles of Animal Care

This online SRUC certificate is for anyone wanting to develop their knowledge of all aspects of the animal care sector.

Schools are encouraged to enrol students who want to learn specific vocational skills, which include feeding, housing, caring for and training small animals. The course also addresses some key transferable skills like communication, information processing, and health and safety.

The course, offered to those in S4, S5 and S6, is delivered by distance learning and can be completed by anyone, irrespective of location.

This course offers an excellent introduction to animal care and can act as an important first step on a career ladder. SRUC offers a number of full time courses in Animal Care for future progression.

Veterinary Terminology

This online certificate is designed to demystify some of the terms and jargon used in the field of Veterinary Medicine. The course is beneficial to anyone wanting to embark on a career in the animal care or veterinary sector and is strongly recommended to anyone wanting to pursue a Veterinary Nursing qualification.

The course, offered to those in S4, S5 and S6, is designed to be completed over the course of one academic year, based on 3-5 hours of self-directed study per week. It is delivered by distance learning and can be completed by anyone, irrespective of location.

This course offers an excellent introduction to veterinary care and can act as an important first step on a career ladder. SRUC offers a number of full time courses in Veterinary Nursing subjects for future progression.

Investigation of Modern Agriculture

The National Progression Award (NPA) Investigation of Modern Agriculture is ideal for anyone who wants to develop their knowledge of the agricultural sector.

This introduction to modern practices in agriculture has been designed for learners with no prior knowledge or experience. It examines the changing face of agriculture today, including the role of technology and precision farming, as well as opportunities for diversification.

The course is designed to be completed over the course of one academic year, based on 3-5 hours of self-directed study per week. It is offered to those in S4, S5 and S6 who are capable of working at SCQF Level 5 and show a keen interest in the subject area.

The majority of the course is delivered online, but it also includes three practical days on a farm or at a local business.

Completion of this programme will provide a useful progression route into a full time agriculture course or apprenticeship.

Horticulture

The National Progression Award (NPA) Horticulture is an introduction to the horticulture industry, showcasing the variety of activities, skills and careers. Students are introduced to how plants are produced, grown and used, from the production of new plants to establishing and maintaining them, and on to designing and creating plant displays.

The course includes plant identification, so that students can correctly state which plants are grown where, and why. Students investigate an area of the Scottish horticultural industry which interests them, such as horticultural science, design, plant production, retail, or conservation. They also attend supervised practical sessions at SRUC campuses where they learn fundamental horticultural skills.

The course is designed to be completed over the course of one academic year, based on 3-5 hours of self-directed study per week. The course is offered to those in S4, S5 and S6 and is delivered mostly online, but with the requirement to attend some supervised practical activity on-campus.

Completion of this programme will provide a useful progression route into a full time horticulture course or apprenticeship.
