Threats to our environment are increasing and range from changes in agriculture and forestry to recreation, urban development and population growth. These in turn have knock-on effects such as climate change, water and food shortages, biodiversity loss and the impact of non-native species.
One of the areas where these factors come together is in the field of wildlife and conservation management. Efforts to conserve species and habitats can conflict with public use of the countryside resulting in conflict that land managers must address. This programme focuses on equipping students with skills and understanding related to a broad range of topics and land uses, ranging from conservation management to rural land use planning and interpretation to application of advancing technologies.
Course delivery is by a combination of live online lectures on weekday evenings and self-guided materials. There are also two in-person study weekends each year at venues in Scotland, where we undertake site visits and discuss matters relating to modules being studied. These are also a great opportunity to meet fellow students and lecturers. Attendance at study weekends is very much encouraged though is not mandatory.
Applications are accepted from those with an honours degree, which may or may not be in a related subject. Students come from diverse backgrounds and have included graduates in History, Education, Business Management and Art History as well as in Ecology and related natural sciences. Exceptionally, non-graduate applicants with substantial relevant work experience may be considered.
The MSc/PgDip/PgCert Wildlife and Conservation Management is delivered by SRUC and is validated by the University of Glasgow. In 2025, the course won the prestigious award of Higher Education Programme of the Year in the annual awards presented by the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management.
