The CertHE in Rural Veterinary Technology blends practical teaching and theory to help students gain the skills needed to undertake work as a large animal veterinary technician. The role of the veterinary technician is vital for supporting veterinary surgeons and adding to the natural economy of Scotland and filling the current skills gap. The first of its kind in the country, the Certificate of Higher Education will give students the skills and knowledge for supporting and improving animal welfare and production. Students will understand the role within the natural economy and how their work will benefit farmers and the wider community.
Veterinary Technicians are a relatively new addition to the vet-led team and now perform many procedures which are essential in maintaining the health and welfare of farm animals and horses, as delegated by the veterinary surgeon and authorised by the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons).
CertHE Rural Veterinary Technology
Rural Veterinary Technology is the first full-time programme of its kind in the UK, with the aim of developing the skills needed for graduates to work as large animal veterinary technicians. The programme will be delivered by the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biosciences, where students will gain significant practical experience with a range of production and large animal species, working with staff to learn core skills such as body condition scoring, locomotion analysis and foot trimming to name only a few. The programme is underpinned by key scientific principles where core skills such as communication and animal handling are taught from the first week, ensuring graduates are confident and capable in their skills development when going into the workplace. *This programme is still awaiting final validation and is subject to change.
