Bluetongue (BTV): Please Do Not Send Samples to SRUC Veterinary Services Where Infection Is Suspected
We recognise that many veterinary practices and livestock keepers are currently dealing with the impact of Bluetongue Virus (BTV), and we appreciate the additional challenges this creates.
As you are aware, suspicion of BTV must always be reported to APHA.

As outlined in previous communications, BTV is regulated under the Specified Animal Pathogens Order (SAPO).
Because of this, SRUC Veterinary Services cannot accept samples or carcases where there is reasonable suspicion that they may contain Bluetongue virus.
This means that samples and carcases from animals where BTV is suspected, under investigation, or confirmed must not be submitted to SRUC for laboratory testing.
Veterinary judgement should be exercised at the level of the individual animal being sampled. The presence of confirmed BTV infection elsewhere within a herd or flock does not automatically mean that all animals on that holding should be regarded as suspect BTV cases. Equally, the absence of clinical signs does not necessarily exclude BTV infection, particularly in cattle. Epidemiological risk factors should be considered alongside clinical findings.
Samples may be submitted once BTV has been ruled out and any APHA investigation has been completed.

*Investigation of suspect cases:
- Within Restricted Zone and Infected Area, additional samples can be taken while BTV testing is underway. These samples must not be submitted to SRUC until BTV has been ruled out.
- Outside the restricted Zone and Infected Area, including in the Temporary Control Zone, APHA guidance should be followed throughout the investigation of any suspect BTV case.
