Eilidh Simmons
I’m from Tomintoul, Moray, and chose to study Equine Science and Management at SRUC because I wanted to turn my lifelong passion for horses into a career. Before starting the course, I had limited practical experience, so SRUC offered the perfect opportunity to develop my skills and knowledge across all areas of the equine industry.
I chose SRUC because of the excellent equine facilities at Oatridge, including the Scottish National Equestrian Centre, and the opportunity to learn from experienced lecturers with industry and research backgrounds.
One of my biggest highlights has been the work placements, including my third-year placement in the Netherlands, which helped me gain confidence, experience and valuable industry connections. I’ve also enjoyed developing my riding skills through regular training and gaining my BHS qualifications.
Alongside my studies, I run my own equine photography business, Ruthven Photography. After graduating, I plan to spend time working with Icelandic horses while exploring future opportunities in areas such as trekking, rescue and rehabilitation.
My advice to future students is to take every opportunity you’re given – you never know where it might lead.
