Nation's favourite cat and dog name
LUNA is the UK’s most popular pet name, according to a major new survey of our furry friends.
The pet names were collected from owners taking part in a wider SRUC-led study for the Veterinary Medicines Directorate into antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in healthy cats and dogs. The list of pet names not only supported sample tracking but have given researchers an opportunity to share insights into the nation’s favourite pet names.
Luna is the top name for cats and is the overall favourite for both cats and dogs named in the study. Bella is the most common name among the dogs taking part in the research into AMR.
Daisy, Alfie and Coco were also close contenders, and more unusual pet names include Madog, Couscous, Hannibal and Derek.
More than 1,000 cat and dog owners participated in the survey which was run by the research company Ipsos on their KnowledgePanel - a high-quality online survey panel which ensures an accurate cross-section of the general population. The survey fieldwork was conducted by Ipsos with support from SRUC.
SRUC School of Veterinary Medicine and Biosciences’ Inverness-based scientists are currently assessing AMR levels in UK companion animals. The research aims to improve understanding of antibiotic use and resistance in cats and dogs.
Laura Dixon, Senior Lecturer in Animal Behaviour and Welfare at SRUC, said: “Choosing a name for a companion pet is helpful in recognising the animal as an individual, in developing the human-animal bond and the importance we put on their care and welfare including disease prevention. The AMR in pets project will help inform future health policies to protect both animal and human health. “
