Courses for horses

Horse lovers in the north east of Scotland are set to benefit from a partnership between SRUC and Aberdeen Riding Club to deliver new higher education courses.

The Equine Studies course is being offered at both HNC and HND level at SRUC’s Aberdeen campus from September 2021, in addition to Horse Care and Equine Studies courses at the Oatridge campus in West Lothian.

The HNC course is designed to give students practical experience and knowledge of horse care and riding, while the HND course builds on this to provide additional experience and knowledge in management within the equine industry.

The courses are suitable for students with no prior riding experience and can be studied on a full or part-time basis.

The theoretical aspect of these courses, including anatomy, physiology and nutrition, will be taught at SRUC, with the practical sessions delivered by Aberdeen Riding Club.

Professor Neil Foster, Head of Department of Veterinary and Animal Science at SRUC, said: “We are very pleased to announce these new courses. At SRUC we pride ourselves on our collaboration with industry and providing highly educated graduates ready for the workplace.”

Sally McCarthy, Director of Aberdeen Riding Club, said: “We are really looking forward to welcoming the students to our centre in September – the partnership of a commercial centre which delivers British Horse Society training and assessments with SRUC will make for a brilliant learning experience for students.”
