Overview & what's involved

This course will give you the training to ensure you can operate a ride-on mower safely and efficiently.

With proper training, most pose little risk to either the user or anyone near to the machine.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Minimum age 16.

Full description

This course will give you an insight into both safety awareness and risk assessment. You will run through the machine's capabilities and learn how to maintain the mower. After that, you will gain practical experience, including mowing on slopes.

The course covers how to:

Identify the risks associated with the use of different types of ride-on mowers
Select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
Identify the controls and components
Carry out daily checks as indicated in the operator’s manual
Carry out pre-start checks
Identify and report any faults
Adjust the cutting mechanism to achieve the required standard
Operate the machine in a safe and competent manner
Perform after-use maintenance
Load and transport the machine (if appropriate)

Note:

The expected duration for the course is one day, however please note this may vary according to factors such as level of experience, modules or attachments selected.

What to bring

Eye protection, hearing protection, overalls (or close fitting trousers and Jacket), boots with steel toe caps.

Cancellations must be made at least 10 working days prior to the course start date otherwise the full course fee is still payable. In the event that SRUC has to cancel a course for any reason your course fees will be refunded in full or your booking transferred to the next available date if this is suitable.

Certification

This course is Lantra certified but please note that from 1 April 2025 Lantra will no longer be producing Physical Certificates and/or Learner Cards. For Courses delivered after this date we are only sending eCertificates. Learners can order physical copies direct via the Lantra Learner Hub if required.
