Interpretation of RSV Antibody ELISA OD Results
- Positive: > 0.249
- Inconclusive: 0.150-0.249
- Negative: < 0.150
Single samples only indicate exposure to infection, but give no indication of when this occurred and therefore cannot be used to diagnose the cause of pneumonia outbreaks. Maternal antibody is likely to make a significant contribution to the titres in animals aged less than 4 months and may inhibit seroconversion. This makes single samples in cattle of this age of minimal diagnostic value.
This test can be used for paired serology, with acute and convalescent samples collected from the same animal typically 2 to 6 weeks apart. An increase in OD from negative or inconclusive is significant. Increasing OD values in the positive range are more difficult to interpret but increases of 0.2 OD units or greater are likely to be significant.
