I am a human geographer interested in regional development, migration, and policy. My former work included working with isolated island communities in Croatia, rural communities in the Mid North region of South Australia and Västerbotten region in the Northern Sweden. During my PhD, I collaborated with the Mid North Knowledge Partnership (Flinders University Rural and Remote Health SA) and Swedish Centre for Rural Health (SCRH) (former GMC, Sweden), living in rural areas and using qualitative methods to study population mobility. Simultaneously, I also led a five-year longitudinal study (2013–2018) on human capital retention and migration experiences in rural South Australia and contributed to the Free Range pilot (SSHRC International Knowledge Exchange grant) examining some of the issues affecting the health and well-being of small rural communities in Australia, Sweden, and Canada.

Currently, I am a Research Fellow at the Rural Policy Centre, at SRUC, working on Scottish Government’s Strategic Research Programme funded projects.

I also actively engage in Scottish Parliament Cross-Party Group meetings on rural policy and contributes to interdisciplinary projects such as Agriculture Health Nexus (WHO), Intangible (British Academy), and Rural Exodus in Europe (Council of Europe).

I also holds multiple academic roles:

  • Visiting Lecturer, University of Edinburgh (Field Methods in Research and Practice)
  • Lecturer, The Faculty of Economics, Tourism and Business at the University of Split (BS Tourism Geography; Regional Economics)
  • University Fellow (Honorary Appointment), Northern Institute at the Charles Darwin University
