Meet the Consultant - Scott Murdoch

Scott Murdoch

I’m Scott and I have been working for SAC Consulting for just over a year now as an Agricultural Consultant based in Stirling. I grew up in a village near Biggar, South Lanarkshire and always had an interest in farming and ambition to work in the agricultural industry This led me to spending my summer holidays on my grandparents’ farm, before getting my first job on a local dairy farm.

Early mornings and dirty jobs weren’t enough to put me off and I quickly enrolled into a HND course at Oatridge after leaving school. After graduating in 2015, I decided the world was bigger than South Lanarkshire and off I went to Cornwall. Here I worked on a recently converted 300 cow grazing dairy, who milked their cows only once a day and produced ice cream. This sparked a particular interest in dairying as well as grass and forage management.

I was then given the opportunity to move to the Southern Hemisphere, where I continued to milk cows as well as take on seasonal work including combining, lambing outdoors, and outwintering on a large scale. One of the farms I worked on grazed 1000 dairy cows on kale and fodder beet over the winter months, from which I have generated a real interest in winter forage crops. My time in New Zealand also increased my knowledge of grass management, and it has left me convinced it is the best driver for profitability. I have also spent time in Canada, where the climate couldn’t have been any different to that of back home. Summers peaked at 40 degrees, winters at -40 degrees and the fields were literally a mile long. From my time in Canada, I learned all about conserving moisture through management practices like direct drilling and stripper headers.

After my four years in Canada, I returned to the UK where I worked on a beef finishing unit, I realised that after over a decade working on various farms, gaining experience of many different farming practices it was time to move onto the next step of my agricultural career. My time on farm had left me with a real passion for dairying, soil management as well as anything forage related, consulting felt like a natural step where I could apply my knowledge and skillset learnt on farm.

Since joining SAC Consulting in December 2024, I have supported clients across a wide range of work, including carbon auditing, business planning, IACS submissions all alongside responding to the varied day to day queries that come from clients. As part of my role within the Stirling team, I am responsible for livestock rationing. I find rationing and nutrition associated work satisfying and enjoy finding the right balance of feed availability on farm, optimising output, and ensuring the ration remains cost effective. I also like to access the use of alternates, ultimately, it’s about tailoring the animal and client needs to ensure the best outcome.

I have recently become FACTS qualified, which now enables me to advise on best practice in fertiliser use and plant nutrient management, and undertake effective nutrient management advice and budgeting. It’s been a busy and varied start to my consulting career, and I’m excited to see what lies ahead.
