From 1st October 2025, CHECS has introduced a new Risk Level 1* (RL1*) status for Johne’s Disease – a step forward in herd health assurance.
The RL1* classification is an enhanced level of recognition for herds already holding Risk Level 1 status. To qualify, herds must have:
-
No blood-positive animals for Johne’s Disease in their most recent whole-herd test,
-
And no positives in the previous 12 months.
This new category gives buyers and breeders extra confidence that these herds are in the lowest possible risk group for Johne’s Disease.
Certificates and pen cards for qualifying herds will proudly show how many consecutive years they’ve maintained both R1 and R1* status – a clear signal of consistent herd health and good management.
Why This Matters
Johne’s Disease continues to affect animal welfare, productivity, and farm sustainability across the UK. The introduction of the RL1* status supports ongoing industry efforts to reduce disease spread and reward farmers committed to maintaining high health standards.
If you’re already Risk Level 1, now’s the time to take the next step. Working towards RL1* not only strengthens your herd’s reputation but also adds real value when selling or breeding livestock.
