SRUC selected for Apache Corporation Tree Grant Programme
SRUC has been selected for the 2025–2026 UK Apache Corporation Tree Grant Programme.
The achievement marks a second phase of partnership with Apache and a significant milestone for environmental restoration at SRUC’s Barony campus in Dumfries.
Chosen from a highly competitive field of applicants, SRUC’s proposal was recognised for its clear scope, strong environmental impact and long-term vision for sustainable land management.
Now in its 20th year in the United States and third year in the United Kingdom, the Apache Tree Grant Programme supports projects that deliver lasting environmental stewardship and conservation benefits.
The grant will support the second phase of work at the Barony campus:
- 2025 - Phase 1: Addressed damage caused by Storm Arwen
- 2026 - Phase 2: Will support ecological recovery following Storm Floris.
Led by SRUC Barony lecturers, the long-term ambition is to develop the Barony forest using Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF). This sustainable forest management approach maintains a continuous canopy of native trees, enhancing biodiversity, strengthening ecosystem resilience and supporting environmental conservation for generations to come.
Securing a second phase of funding represents a meaningful continuation of the partnership between SRUC and Apache Corporation. Staff and students across the Dumfries campus have welcomed the announcement as a powerful endorsement of the work already achieved and the shared commitment to sustainability.
Arlene Barclay, Environmental Manager said: “This funding is incredibly significant for our staff, students, and campus community. Having the opportunity to partner with Apache for a second time is something we are utterly delighted about. It confirms the strong connection between our organisations and enables us to continue work that makes a real and lasting environmental difference.”
Planning for Phase 2 will again involve close collaboration with nursery professionals to ensure the selection and handling of appropriate native tree species, with further project imagery to be shared upon completion of the 2026 planting phase.
SRUC extends its sincere thanks to Apache Corporation, its staff, and the judging panel for their continued support and belief in the project.
This funding strengthens SRUC’s dedication to sustainability, education and practical conservation.
