BSc (Hons) Garden and Greenspace Design

Gardens and greenspaces are essential for improving health and wellbeing and creating a sense of belonging. In a changing climate with increased pressure on urban and rural land, landscape designers are ideally placed to provide leadership through clarity of vision. This course gives students the skills and awareness required to practice working in a variety of settings, from the domestic garden to the public open space.

In the first two years of the degree you will study the fundamentals of garden design alongside students on the HND Garden Design course. Year three opens with the exciting opportunity to visit a foreign destination as part of the International Design Project module. You will work on real life projects with real clients in the public and private realm at a variety of scales, learning how to understand places, plants, and people in increasing detail. In the final year of the honours degree, students will research projects of their own choosing in the field of landscape design.

A qualification in Garden Design can open up a wide range of career possibilities – from garden designers, landscape architects, landscape technicians, labourers, maintenance workers, gardeners, design and build operatives to contract managers and estimators; many successful students now run their own small businesses.

Then Garden & Greenspace Design is the course for you!

Over the course of four years, you'll gain a broad understanding of garden design and making a living from it.

You'll study landscape graphics, design and composition, environmental psychology and planting design. You'll also learn about surveying, computer-aided design, and international and regional garden styles.

We'll examine climatic zones, working with ornamental plants, creating sustainable design and resolving environmental issues.

Your journey ends with a research project that takes an in-depth look at the subject you're most interested in, pulling together everything you've learned.
