Edinburgh Campus
The Applied Animal Science course is campus based. It can be studied full time or part time. The commitment for full time students is 30-40 hours per week; you will spend approximately 10-15 hours a week in class or on visits and the rest is time you will spend on independent study.
Some of your modules will be taught entirely on-campus whilst others will incorporate some online directed learning, for example using a flipped classroom model where you will be required to watch a pre-recorded lecture or complete an activity at home and then in class apply that new knowledge or skill to a class activity or discussion.
As well as the subject knowledge you gain, you will also develop a range of transferable skills such as lab skills, data collection and analysis skills, problem solving skills and group working and communication skills all of which are valuable and highly sought-after for a wide range of careers within and outwith science.
Active learning is an important part of the Applied Animal Science course. For example, throughout your degree you will develop a range of laboratory skills that underpin the knowledge you gain from your different modules. From the basics of Good Laboratory Practice and lab book keeping to correct pipette technique and DNA extractions to enable species identification. You will use microscopy to observe mitosis in real time and conduct faecal egg counts. You will get to see antimicrobial resistance in action using microbiology and carry out genetic engineering to make bacteria glow. You will also perform dissections to reinforce your learning and understanding of anatomy and physiology of different species. And you will get to use ELISA’s to determine which Panda should be placed on a breeding programme and monitor their stress response. There is also the opportunity to carry out work experience in the Biomarkers Lab and participate in the East Bio studentship.
A fundamental part of the Applied Animal Science is seeing how our knowledge of the life sciences and social sciences can be applied in the real world, so visits to SRUC’s animal facilities are an important part of the course. In addition, we have excellent links with a number of animal charities and industries and will visit these at part of your class time. These include Edinburgh Zoo, Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, Charles River, Argaty Red Kites and more.
