The Hospitality team at the Elmwood Campus of SRUC has been hitting the road recently with their Ready Steady Cook roadshow.
Hospitality lecturing staff and students from Elmwood visited four high schools over three days and challenged students from S4-S6 to prepare a tasty dish from a secret bag of ingredients.
Once the Elmwood chefs had inspired the students with a cooking demonstration on what could be achieved in the time limit, the students were then left to their own devices to be as creative and inventive as they liked!
The standard throughout the week was very high with school pupils working in pairs to plan the dish, prepare the vegetables, show good knife skills, cook, season and present their dish. An overall winning team was announced at the end of each session after a thorough tasting by the judges!
Bell Baxter High School, Levenmouth Academy, Perth Grammar and The Waid Academy participated in this pilot project and all four schools thoroughly impressed the Elmwood chefs.
Vicki Munro, Programme Leader, Hospitality said: “It was great to visit the four schools in their Home Economics department and see how engaged the pupils were in the activity we set for them. The enthusiasm and passion for cooking was outstanding and all pupils were a credit to their school. With this level of commitment demonstrated by each pupil I feel our food and drink industry has a great future to look forward to. The Hospitality students we took to each school were so engaged with the school pupils and it was so rewarding to see how their confidence had developed and grown over the year.”
