The humble neep was the focus of an interview at the Oatridge campus for the Halloween Special of BBC Radio Scotland’s Out of Doors programme.

Presenter Mark Stephen visited Oatridge and interviewed horticulture lecturer George Gilchrist and assistant gardener Ray Collinson about the history of the swede and the tradition of carving Halloween lanterns from the vegetable in Scotland.

The programme had decided that it would be a pumpkin free zone – and focused instead on the swede and how it became a staple of Scotland’s root vegetable crops.

George said he and Ray enjoyed the experience: “It’s safe to say that neither Ray nor I see a future in the media so it was with some trepidation that we approached the interview. However having listened to the Out of Doors programme for many years it was interesting to put a face to a voice that you have known for many years.

“It’s nice to get some attention for the work we and our students have done over the last three years that has gone into the allotment areas at the Oatridge Campus, and in particular the World War One allotment.

“Everyone involved with the project has found that almost all the heritage vegetables also have a fascinating history. I hope it will encourage more people - including staff - to come and see our allotment areas either at the college or next years Royal Highland Show.”

George added that he hoped the broadcast would be a platform for more features on the radio show. “Mark said it has been about six years since he was last at Oatridge. I certainly hope it’s not that long until his next visit and we get to promote some of our work on a more regular basis on the Out of Doors programme.”

For those that missed the broadcast slot you can listen to it here on the BBC iplayer. The interview is at the start of the broadcast.

The programme also recorded a separate item which focused specifically on the World War One allotment. This was broadcast the following Saturday. You can listen to that feature here on the BBC iplayer at 15 mins 25 seconds.
