Thomas Muirhead and Kyle Smith in action

Two SRUC student curlers were in the men’s bronze medal winning rink at the 2015 World University Winter Games in Spain and the UK’s only medal winners.

The UK rink included Agriculture student Thomas Muirhead and recent Agriculture graduate Kyle Smith who had the honour of carrying the national flag during the opening ceremony in Granada.

Having finished after the round robin tournament in the top four, with three losses and six wins, the UK men’s rink was beaten by the Russian Federation in their semi-final match. However they went on to win over Sweden to take third place overall and collect the bronze medal. Norway won gold with silver to the Russian Federation.

The UK ladies rink was less successful, finishing seventh in the overall standings, although the rink, including Sustainable Environmental Management student Laura Ritchie, and Activity Tourism Management graduate Hazel Smith, had good victories over Spain, Korea and Japan.
