Matthew Jamieson receives RNAS Apprenticeship Award from Jane Mitchel of Clydesdale Bank

While many of those honoured annually by the Royal Northern Agricultural Society (RNAS) have had long careers, SRUC is proud to be linked with younger people making their mark in north east Scotland.

Two students at SRUC Aberdeen received Clydesdale Bank sponsored Apprenticeship Awards while our own Under 35 trophy, shared with the RNAS, was awarded to another former Aberdeen student and the office manager of a local grain co op.

The Apprenticeship Awards, one presented to someone working at home and one to someone working for another employer, went to Matthew Jamieson and Rebecca Rainnie. They received their Shields from Jane Mitchel, local representative of the Clydesdale Bank.

Matthew, from Newtonbrae Farm, Keith, graduated this summer with a BSc in Agriculture. He works at home where they have some 100 Simmental cross sucklers. He also puts some time in with a local contractor which will help prepare him for next March when he plans to go to America where, amongst other things, he wants to join a combining team working from Canada to Texas.

From Logie Coldstone near Aboyne she is presently studying for an Honours degree in Rural Business Management. While being of some help on the family farm with its herd of 50 sucklers she works every holiday for the local Woodside Veterinary Group practice and on Fridays works with Aberdeen and Northern Marts. After graduating she plans to see how other parts of the world manage their agricultural industries.

Dr Kyrsten Black, SRUC Assistant Principal HE and Dean of Aberdeen campus presented the SRUC under 35 award to Janelle Anderson from Old Rayne. Janelle was an Aberdeen student in the late nineties, winning the HND Prize and going on to complete her degree. She is now office manager with the co operative cereal marketing group Aberdeen Grain and a former Chair of the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs. Janelle is currently junior Vice Chair of the RNAS and has recently become secretary of both the NE Aberdeen-Angus Club and the North of Scotland Farm Management Association.
