Scotland’s Rural College hosted a record breaking careers day at their Oatridge Campus in West Lothian recently.
The event attracted the largest ever number of students with over 600 attending from SRUC campuses across Scotland. Forty organisations were on hand to offer information, advice and, in some cases, the chance of securing a placement or paid employment.
The exhibitors ranged from laboratories to catering companies, including representation from large multinationals, family businesses and the volunteering and education sectors.
One of the students who attended the event, Katrina Macarthur, HNC Agriculture, said: “I thought it was a very interesting day. We learned about the practicalities of looking for a career post college, what the businesses do and how they fit with our studies. I also attended one of the presentations where they explained how to apply for positions in that company and how to prepare our CV to be successful with them. It was so relevant.”
The exhibitors’ feedback confirmed that the companies attending valued the opportunity to meet with the workforce of the future.
The representative from Mogahan Mushrooms said: “We can offer opportunities that cover many areas, from agriculture to horticulture. We have roles in management and accounting. The students today seem really engaged, asking questions. The event is one of the best organised ones that I have attended. We would definitely consider coming back.”
The organisers valued the support offered by sponsor the National Farmers Union Scotland (NFUS) which funded career guidance packs for students attending. These will also be made accessible to all students via SRUC’s student portal.
The next careers event is anticipated as being held during November 2015. Companies interested in attending should contact Sharon.Reekie@sruc.ac.uk to book a place.
