Campus: SRUC King's Buildings, Edinburgh
"The practical classes on farms were what I enjoyed most, as well as the visits from professionals within the industry who were willing to share their experiences and wisdom."
Having been brought up on a farm, John McCulloch always wanted to work in the agricultural industry and decided to go to SRUC to further his knowledge.
The 22-year-old, who is originally from Stirling but now lives and works in Dumfries and Galloway, started with an NC in Agriculture at SRUC’s Oatridge campus before completing an HND in Edinburgh.
“Having been brought up in the industry, I wanted to further my knowledge and get new experiences,” he said. “SRUC was always advertised at shows and sales and many of my friends were also going to study there so it was the natural choice.
“The practical classes on farms were what I enjoyed most, as well as the visits from professionals within the industry who were willing to share their experiences and wisdom.”
While he struggled with learning online during the coronavirus pandemic, he described the support of lecturers as “fantastic throughout this time”.
During his studies, he worked part-time on a beef farm in Dumfries – and is now working full time as a stockman.
“It has been a great experience so far,” he said. “I plan to continue working here and have no plans to move. However, I will keep an eye out on what opportunities are available.”
You will develop independent learning skills and team working skills which will provide a strong foundation for future study and/or employment in the industry.
