Research interests

My current research interests are around precision livestock farming (PLF), feed efficiency and methane mitigation strategies, this includes:

  • Investigating the use of multi-sensor systems to remotely assess the performance of beef animals.
  • Physiological monitoring of pre-weaned calves as a method of early detection of disease.
  • Investigating novel diet additives as methane mitigation strategies.
  • Development of proxy methods for methane measurement.
  • Development and testing of multi-sensor systems to remotely assess calving.
  • Assessment of electronic identification (EID) in bovine systems.
  • Applications of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in forage analysis.

Selected research projects

  • Precision Beef (Innovate UK) - The overall aim of this project is to develop an animal mounted sensor system that can capture beef cattle feeding behaviour patterns. This information will be integrated with a feeding system to provide a robust and accurate method to determine individual animal feed intake
  • Monitoring Calf Health (AHDB) - The aim of this project is to investigate the use of monitoring techniques, which target a range of different physiological functions (activity, feeding behaviour and intake) as a means of identifying the onset of disease in calves.
  • Evaluation of an anti-methanogenic feed additive on methane emissions - This study aims to evaluate the methane reducing action of a feed additive at varying doses.
  • Work Package 2.3 (Scottish Government - RESAS)
  • PhD – High Throughput Approaches to Evaluate Between-Animal Variation in Digestion of Cattle - The aim of this project was to refine and apply rapid techniques to assess the chemical (NIRS) and physical (laser diffraction) attributes of faeces, and characterise the rumen microbiome (16S next generation sequencing) associated with between-animal variation in feed efficiency.

Teaching

Recently involved in teaching energy losses and efficiency in agroecosystems (livestock systems).
