Distillery by-products are an important source of animal feed for the beef, dairy and sheep sectors in Scotland.
SRUC was commissioned by Scottish Government to investigate the parameters influencing the supply of co-products to farmers in response to concerns by livestock farmers about the availability of distillery by-products in Scotland.
Feed trade sources reported that Scottish availability of distillery co-products in feeds was at a historical high level in 2012, with usage in animal feed having risen 51% since 2007. These estimates are subject to uncertainty with future price and availability in Scotland influenced by a range of factors including; the level of whisky production, use for alternatives such as energy and the level of cross border trade in by-products from ethanol production in England.
