Course: HNC Agriculture, SRUC Ayr
SRUC alumnus Alex Dunbar is jet-setting his way around the world on
an impressive and fast-rising rugby career which, since signing with the
Glasgow Warriors in 2009, has taken him to the top of the profession.
Alex completed an HNC Agriculture at SRUC's Ayr Campus
in 2008, having always had a great passion for farming. While studying
at Ayr he found great encouragement from his lecturers, in particular
Gordon Soane, his Advisor of Study. Gordon covered the mechanical side
of Alex’s course and was an excellent teacher and mentor. Through his
studies Alex was encouraged by friends to take part in social rugby
games and proved to be a natural, “Ayr had a good rugby scene, so it was
easy to get involved with College teams,” he said.
gives credit to the Annan Rugby Club, which helped build and shape his
rugby career. Great coaching enabled Alex to reach the Dumfries and
Galloway squad and then move into age group rugby at Glasgow and the
Scottish National Academy. Alex was picked up by the Glasgow Warriors as
one of their centre players after showing significant talent and
Alex’s greatest achievement to date is winning his
first cap for Scotland, after getting into the sport relatively late in
comparison to most professional rugby players.
Despite his busy schedule, Alex still finds time to act as an ambassador for RSABI,
a charity which aid people working with the land who have suffered
injury or illness and fallen on hardship. Alex works with RSABI to
promote and develop its work to a wider audience.
