2015: Low carbon rural behaviours

Rural housing

Heating our homes accounts for over 50% of total domestic energy consumption, making it the biggest portion of UK household energy consumption, followed by water heating and electricity.

This RPC research report investigates how rural householders in Scotland may best be supported to lower their carbon emissions whilst maintaining levels of comfort in the home. Understanding how householders perceive thermal comfort is important for climate change mitigation, as perceptions and expectations of thermal comfort will ultimately underpin household heating behaviours.

Significant changes to current levels of domestic heating are vital in order to make serious progress in reducing household CO2 emissions and mitigating climate change, and therefore to achieve a low carbon future for Scotland.
