2012: EFRA Inquiry – Rural Communities

In September 2012 Scotland's Rural College (previously known as SAC) responded to an inquiry on Rural Communities.  The response to the EFRA (Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) Committee was co-ordinated by SRUC's Rural Policy Centre.

The inquiry focused on the Rural Communities Policy Unit (RCPU), a new unit set up within  the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, specifically to operate as a centre of rural expertise, supporting and co-ordinating activity within and beyond DEFRA.

The inquiry focused on the following areas to assess the RCPU's effectiveness in delivering rural development:

  • The approach of the RCPU - effectiveness in engaging with rural communities
  • Rural grants and funding - effectiveness in stimulating sustainable growth in the rural economy
  • Government Policy - what should be in it, and what are the priorities?
