Congenital Mandibular Deformity in Calves

We have received a report of a high incidence (around 20%) of apparent congenital malformations of the mandible (or associated soft tissues) in a beef herd.

Affected calves have an angular deformity so that the incisors are not parallel with the dental pad. The tongue often displaces to the side where there is a gap. The calves struggle to suckle (and have poor suck reflex) and require intensive nursing.

Investigations are ongoing as to the likely cause, but we would be very interested to know if you have seen any similar cases in recent years.  Please email us if you have any relevant information.
