Kirkton sheepPost Mortem Examination

Post mortem examinations and abortion investigations can be carried out. Each Veterinary Services Centre has a fully equipped post mortem room for all farm animal species. All inclusive pricing, and a discounted batch rate for submissions of two to four carcases, make post mortems a cost effective way of investigating problems such as sudden deaths and ill thrift.

Histopathology and Cytology

Our histopathologists provide specialist reports on biopsies, post mortem samples, aspirates and body fluids. This input often helps to resolve more challenging cases.

Clinical Pathology

A full range of biochemical and haematological tests and hormone assays are available for diagnostic purposes and health monitoring. Examples include assessing the adequacy of dietary energy and protein 4 to 6 weeks pre lambing or checking the trace element status of lambs at weaning.

Microbiology

Services cover bacteriology and sensitivity testing, mycology and virology.

Molecular Biology

PCR testing for a range of diseases, including Border Disease and Johnes Disease, is carried out at our central laboratory in Edinburgh. Scrapie genotyping is also available.

Serology

Goats grazingTests for diagnostic and screening purposes are available for a range of bacterial and viral diseases. These include abortion agents such as EAE and Toxoplasma and causes of ill thrift such as Maedi Visna (MV) and Caseous Lymphadenitis (CLA).

Parasitology

Routine worm, coccidial and fluke egg counts are performed at local laboratories. Coproantigen ELISA testing complements traditional liver fluke diagnostics and provides a straightforward way to screen for triclabendazole resistance.

Microscopy

In order to encourage submission of samples from suspect sheep scab cases, SAC Consulting Veterinary Services offers free testing of skin scrapings thanks to funding from the Scottish Government. Vets are also encouraged to take blood samples from suspect cases to assist the Moredun Research Institute with development of their serological test.

Fertility Examinations

Examination of rams and collection and assessment of semen is available at some laboratories.

Vitamin and Mineral Testing

Mineral deficiencies / excesses can be encountered in animals resulting in loss of production, poor health, reduced growth rate, possible death and loss of profit. It is also important to remember that many minerals can act antagonistically against the absorption of other minerals. Click here for further information.

On-farm Consultancy

The Scottish Government provides funding for the investigation of unusual disease outbreaks. This allows SAC Consulting Vets to visit farms, in association with the local veterinary practice, to collect more information on cases where the disease presentation is atypical or the cause is not clear. It also allows more in depth projects to be carried out into disease syndromes that can impact flocks on a wider scale.

Flock Health Screening and Monitoring Programmes

SAC Consulting Veterinary Services promotes flock health through the Premium Sheep and Goat Health Schemes focusing on EAE, Maedi Visna/CAE and Scrapie.

Our animal health planning system provides a framework for vets and farmers to work together to record, monitor and improve flock health.

Commercial Contracts

SAC Consulting Veterinary Services provides diagnostic support to pharmaceutical companies. This includes the FlockCheck programme operated by MSD Animal Health which allows aborted ewes to be screened for exposure to Toxoplasmosis and EAE.
