Postgraduate Research Degree Fees and Funding

UK/EU Students

Tuition fees for UK/EU students registered for research degrees for the 2016-2017 session are approximately £4,121 per annum for a PhD (this figure is based on the UK Research Council's UK indicative fee level for 2016-2017) and £7,000 for MSc by research.

Overseas Students

Tuition fees for overseas students registered for a research degree for the 2016-2017 session are approximately £17,200 per annum for a PhD and £22,500 per annum for an MSc by research.

Part-time Students

Students registered as part-time usually pay 50% of the full-time fee per annum.

Stipend

Some studentships will offer a student stipend/allowance. The current UK Research Council recommended stipend level is £14,296 per year but the exact stipend level will depend on the funding for each individual studentship.

It can also be useful to consider becoming a student member of professional bodies related to your area of research as this often enables you to apply for bursaries, reduced rates for attending conferences and reduced rates for journal subscriptions.
