Technical & Administrative Support Officer
Future Farming Systems - Hill & Mountain Research Centre
I have been with SRUC at Kirkton Farm since 2013 after graduating with an honours degree in Applied Animal Science at Auchincruive. I am also now in my spare time studying for a Masters in Rural Business Management through SRUC.
My job role is very varied which keeps it interesting. Part of my time I operate as a technician helping with various research projects, collecting, collating and analysing data. I am responsible for the data collection of our high hill flocks; however I am heavily involved with our recorded flock throughout the year. I also follow through all lambs at the abattoir and take great interest in compiling their finishing data. However, my most favourite part of being a technician is at lambing time where we record information for each lamb.
The other part of my role includes carrying out administrative duties for the farm, wigwams and the research centre and generally being the ‘go to’ person. I am responsible for keeping movement and medicine records up to date for legislative purposes and I also carry out general farm work duties when needed including gathering, working in the fank and rearing pet lambs.
The parts of my job which I find particularly interesting are-
