Course Summary

This course is for practising vets looking to increase their knowledge on improving the health and performance of the dairy calf and heifer through a preventative health planning approach. The heifer represents the future of the dairy herd, yet nationally losses during rearing are too high and age at first calving could be improved. This represents a significant cost to the UK dairy industry and an opportunity for veterinary involvement. This course, delivered by veterinarians and specialist agricultural advisors, looks at health management, nutrition and general rearing requirements relevant to the modern dairy heifer from birth to the end of the first lactation. Discussion workshops and practical sessions will be included.

Course Content

  • Reasons for and economics of voluntary and involuntary culling in the dairy herd and how to assess on farm. What is the correct culling rate and how that drives heifer breeding policy and biosecurity
  • Calf viability, colostrum management and care of the neonatal calf
  • A hazard analysis approach to the control of infectious disease in pre-weaned calves
  • Nutrition and management of the pre-weaned calf to ensure optimal growth
  • Disease control for growing heifers and promoting herd immunity
  • Management and nutrition of growing heifers to ensure optimal age at first calving

  • The course starts at 10.00am on Day One and will finish around 4.00pm on Day Two
