Research Interests

My research interests focus on production efficiency in beef and sheep systems.
I also have operational management responsibility for SRUC's GreenCow respiration chamber facility. Key interests include:

  • Measurement of GHG outputs from ruminants, including proxy development and testing.
  • Reducing the environmental impact of ruminant production systems, including improved production efficiency and GHG mitigation strategies.
  • Precision Livestock Farming: development of technologies for monitoring individual animal productivity, health and welfare in real time.
  • Modelling of beef animal growth and carcass composition.

Selected research projects

  • Re-defining nutrition standards for improving beef production efficiency. Development of improved models for prediction of intake, growth and carcass composition and feed interactions for the UK beef industry (CIEL, AHDB, 2018-2023).
  • Opti-beef. Improved automated carcass grading in the abattoir (Innovate UK, 2019-2022).
  • Beef Monitor. Prediciton of carcass traits in live cattle using measurements from 3D imaging technology (Innovate UK, 2014-2018).
  • Novel animal-mounted sensor technology to improve efficiency and sustainability (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Innovation Club: BBSRC, ESRC, NERC, 2017-2018).
