Achieving Agricultural Sustainability: Opportunities for Change

Over the last five years the Scottish Government through the Rural and Environment Science and Analytical Services Division has been funding research in agroecology and sustainability. One of these areas has been the use of growing more than one crop in the same field and cover crops to reduce inputs and improve biological benefits.

A webinar will be held on the 26th January 2021 between 1:00pm and 2:30pm covering opportunities of intercropping and the use of cover crops.

All mixed up – the benefits and challenges of intercropping

Dr Alison Karley (The James Hutton Institute, Dundee) will discuss Intercropping – growing two or more crop species together – this offers a way of reducing reliance on external inputs, diversifying the crop sequence, and supporting agrobiodiversity. There are challenges, however, around the practicalities of sowing, managing and harvesting intercrops. This presentation will summarise the main findings of intercrop trials carried out with farmers across Scotland and at the institute’s Balruddery Farm and consider some of the practical issues and their potential solutions.

We’ve got it covered – the benefits and opportunities of cover crops

Dr John Baddeley (SRUC, Aberdeen) will present work on cover crops and how they offer us the opportunity to protect or improve our farms, often at times when we are not growing a cash crop. While an essential part of organic farming systems, they have recently gained wider attention due to their potential to reduce agrochemical inputs, deliver wider biodiversity benefits and being part of various subsidy schemes. This presentation offers an overview of recent SRUC trials on a wide range of cover crop species in Scotland. It will give insights into the best performing species, the scale of potential benefits, some tips for success and results from the latest research on the use of species mixtures.
