Wicked Webinar: The Natural Choice - how our natural economy can lead to a new model for prosperity

Date: 22nd September 2020

Location: 53

Time: 13:00 - 14:00

Cost: Free

At SRUC, we are committed to discussing the world’s big ideas and challenges that our society faces. So, we are kicking off our new Wicked Webinar series by focussing on the natural economy.

The natural economy

Scotland’s natural economy has been valued at being over £29 billion a year – more than a fifth of the nation’s economy.

It comprises items that directly use, rely or contribute to conserving natural resources, including tourism, food and drink, fishing and aquaculture, energy, agriculture and forestry, logging and manufacture of wood. Boosting the productivity of our natural economy could lead to economic prosperity and growth.

In this webinar, we will be discussing what the natural economy is, and how this can contribute to a sustainable, green recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Join us and share your ideas with our panel of speakers, where our host, Professor Wayne Powell, Principal and Chief Executive of SRUC, will be discussing these questions with our two speakers:

  • Graeme Blackett is the Director of BiGGAR Economics, and author of the recently published Scotland’s Natural Economy: Sustainable Growth Potential report, commissioned by SRUC.
  • Terry A’Hearn is the CEO of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and has over 20 years’ experience in the environment profession. He is strongly focussed on bringing environmental and economic aims together, supporting business and social innovation.

Our speakers will each give a 10 to –15-minute presentation. Afterwards, we will have a Q&A where we will invite you to ask questions and share your thoughts.
