Mobility Scoring - The first step to reducing lameness in your herd.

Date: 18th January 2021

Location: Online

Time: 19:30 - 21:00

Cost: Free

Mobility scoring is a powerful tool in the fight to reduce lameness levels in dairy herds.

Studies have shown that severely lame cows with internal damage to the pedal bone are unlikely to ever fully recover, even after therapeutic foot trimming.  Early detection allows corrective foot trimming and treatment to be targeted at cows showing mild symptoms; treating them before they become seriously lame and increasing the chances of full recovery.  Not only does this improve animal welfare and productivity, it also boosts staff morale and saves time.  The AHDB Mobility Scoring System is the industry standard for assessing cow mobility but software programmes are also being developed to automatically mobility score and detect lame cows based on their activity and behaviour patterns.

This meeting will focus on the use of both manual and automated systems for early lameness detection and how best to use this information to tackle lameness in the dairy herd. Speakers include:

  • Colin Mason, SRUC Veterinary Services (Chair)
  • Dr Vivi Thorup, Ice Robotics will explain how the automated mobility score was developed for the CowAlert system
  • Hugh McClymont, SRUC SW Farms Manager will discuss how both manual and automated mobility scoring is helping to reduce lameness across SRUC’s three dairy farms.
