Improving environmental sustainability of Scottish livestock supply chains

Sustainable food production for growing global population is one of the biggest challenges of modern agriculture. The aim of this workshop is to present findings of recent research on sustainable livestock supply chains, funded by the Scottish Government’s Strategic Research Programme (2016–2021) Theme 1 (Natural Assets) and Theme 2 (Productive and Sustainable Land Management and Rural Economies). Environmental hotspots of the supply chains will be demonstrated and topics of new case studies will be identified through discussion with stakeholders.

  • The role of livestock in achieving sustainable protein economy in Scotland
  • Understanding the beef supply chain using network analysis
  • Nutrient cycling in livestock production in Scotland
  • Carbon sequestration and reductions of greenhouse gas emissions
  • The role of agricultural by-products in environmentally sustainable livestock feeding
  • Use of farm-level calculation tools for improving environmental sustainability of livestock production
