Research interests

My interests range between all aspects of grass and grassland agronomy; from agricultural production of grass for livestock production; through grasses for soil stabilisation on engineered sites; to the provision of grass playing surfaces for sports and leisure activities.

I am also interested in the potential future role of grassland for the provision of harvestable material that can be used for renewable energy production and bioprocessing.

Selected research projects

  • Anaerobic Digestion of Harvested Vegetation from Typical Scottish Habitats
A range of materials such as rush pasture, Molinia grassland and heather moor harvested and analysed for potential energy production by anaerobic digestion.
  • Survey of a Range of Agricultural Crops and Natural Vegetation in Scotland for Energy Production by Anaerobic Digestion and Hydrothermal Liquefaction
Comparison of a range of cultivated crops and natural vegetation for energy potential by processes of anaerobic digestion and hydrothermal liquefaction.
