The BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection (Agriculture) is the nationally recognised qualification for agronomists, consultants, sales staff, growers and others giving advice on the use of pesticides on agricultural crops. The SRUC BASIS course is delivered by BASIS-qualified instructors and by SRUC specialist consultants.

The course is run in Edinburgh, Scotland over the winter period, supported by crop walks and extensive online material.

Course Dates

Crop Walk: Thursday 30 May 2018
Optional, but we would encourage all on the current course and next winter’s course to attend.

Pre-BASIS: Tuesday 18 September 2018 - Wednesday 19 September 2018
This introductory course covers the biology and ID of weeds, pests and diseases and introduces the major groups of pesticides. It can be attended, or alternatively studied online. Attendance is recommended for those who lack relevant knowledge and experience of weed, pest and disease ID etc. There will be the opportunity to discuss training needs and the BASIS project.

Agronomy Course: Monday 5 November 2018 - Friday 9 November 2018
This is an intensive course that focuses on control of weeds, pests and diseases.

Safety Course: Monday 21 January 2019 - Friday 25 January 2019
This covers pesticide development & registration, formulation, application, resistance issues, active ingredients and legislation - environmental and safety aspects of pesticide use, ICM.

1 × 2-days plus 2 × 5 day blocks plus revsion days, exams and crop walks.

The SRUC BASIS training for the BASIS FSTS Certificate in Crop Protection (Agriculture) course runs in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The course takes place at:

SRUC, King's Buildings, West Mains Road, Edinburgh, EH9 3JG.

This location is convenient for access from other parts of Scotland or from northern England with good access by rail, road and air. There is plenty of inexpensive bed and breakfast, guest house or hotel accommodation within walking distance of SRUC at King's Buildings. An accommodation list is available.


Full course including training, crop walks, revision and full exams - £1,605 + BASIS examination fee of £402 (total £2,007).

Ad hoc training days £120.

Cost includes refreshments and lunch and the current BASIS exam fee, but excludes accommodation.


SDS Individual Training Accounts (ITA)

Individual Training Accounts are now closed to new applicants and it's anticipated they will reopen in April 2019, subject to budget approval.

You may be eligible for part funding to support the cost of this course.
