Transitioning to 'future-fit' agricultural policy in Scotland - implications for beef and sheep sectors (past event)

Talk summary

This talk is a review of post-Brexit agricultural policy developments for the Scottish livestock sector. We look at the direction of travel, as the Scottish Government transition to support that is conditional on climate change and biodiversity performance of farms.

The next decade will be a period of change on our farms. The Agriculture Reform Implementation Oversight Board (ARIOB) is taking forward some of the proposals from farmer-led groups, Farming for 1.5 degrees and the Scottish Government committed to placing new primary legislation in front of the Scottish Parliament in 2023.

The retail and banking sector are also driving changes, meaning the future is not what it used to be, with increased focus on methane and emissions from agriculture. This means farmers and crofters will have to adapt and be as efficient as possible. Ensuring their stock are productive will be vital, meaning the role of veterinarians will continue to be vital to address the root causes of unproductive animals.

Dynamic health planning (past event)

Talk summary

Dynamic Health Planning is a farmer led, vet supported process that aims to continuously improve the health, welfare and production efficiency of livestock on farms. It’s not something that is written once and left in the farm office until the annual check-up, or something generic you can print online. It’s an involved and effective, process that can bring real improvements to livestock efficiency.

This talk will cover the principles and practicalities of dynamic health planning and how vets in practice can best encourage and support their clients in trying a dynamic health plan for the first time.

Speaker: Tim Geraghty, Veterinary Investigation Officer at SRUC
