Research interests

I initially studied Zoology at Edinburgh University (2002-2006) which sparked a keen interest in evolution and parasitology.

I later returned to Edinburgh University in 2013 to undertake a Master’s in Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare during which I completed a project investigating behavioural evidence of pain in turkeys with foot pad dermatitis.

In 2014 I completed a brief internship with the SRUC investigating the effects of ration quality on pig productivity, and returned to the institute the following year to begin my PhD in Neurobiology.

I am currently studying at the INRA institute in Rennes for the first year of my PhD where I am evaluating behavioural evidence of pain and stress in piglets which have undergone the common farm practise of needle tooth resection.

In 2017 I will return to Scotland to continue my PhD, focussing on neurophysiological indicators of pain and stress using samples collected during my time in France.

I am interested in all aspects of animal behaviour and welfare, and find the effects of welfare and stress on pain perception, disease susceptibility, behaviour and productivity to be particularly fascinating.

Selected research projects

  • Investigating Behavioural and Neural/Cellular Consequences of Tooth Resection in Commercial Piglets: Implications for Welfare
An evaluation of behavioural and neurophysiological indicators of pain and stress in piglets during the short and long term periods following tooth clipping / grinding (PhD)
  • Investigation into the Causative Factors of Foot Pad Dermatitis and Behavioural Evidence of Pain in Commercial Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo)
An evaluation of behavioural indicators of pain and stress in turkeys with and without foot pad dermatitis on wet and dry litter (Master’s project)
