A HNC Sports Coaching student from the Elmwood Campus of SRUC (Scotland’s Rural College) has been awarded a Rotary Youth Leadership Award.

Held at the Abernethy Centre, Inverness-shire the Rotary Youth Leadership Award is designed to develop the leadership qualities by providing an intensive and challenging programme, for young people between the ages of 16-18.

Tiffany McNeill (18) from Glenrothes received the award after completing a week-long stay at the Abernethy Centre. The Howe of Fife Rotary Club contacted Elmwood to nominate a student who was willing to take part in the leadership programme.

The objective of the programme was to build confidence, character, commitment, communication, competition and courage.  All of which are basic requirements for strong, imaginative, involved leadership. The Rotary Club selected Tiffany, as she had shown leadership qualities at College, which would be further developed during the course.

Eighty school pupils from 5th and 6th year from across Scotland were selected to take part. Tiffany was involved in activities including hill walking, rock climbing, gorge walking, mountain biking and raft building.

“Overall it has been a worthwhile experience, which has helped build my confidence and leadership skills”, said Tiffany. “I would recommend it to all students who are looking to try something different and get involved in more college activities.”

Wilf Cameron, from the Howe of Fife Rotary Club said:

“Tiffany did tremendously well throughout the leadership programme and we wish her well in the future. It is a wonderful opportunity for the students to build their confidence and meet new people.

Tiffany would like to continue her studies at Elmwood, by progressing onto the HND course, before going on to study at Dundee University. Her goal is to either become a fitness instructor or P.E teacher.
