Chris Watson, from Peterculter in Aberdeen, a student from SRUC’s Elmwood Campus in Cupar, was one of just two runners up in the recent “Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards”.
It was held at Aldwark Manor in York and he was the only representative of a Scottish College to make the final. Now in its 24th year the competition offers students the opportunity to expand their experience by meeting and competing with the best.
Chris, who won trip to the “Continue to Learn” education programme in Harrogate, has attended Elmwood as a block release student since 2010. He gained the SVQ Level 2 Sports Turf, before progressing on to the SVQ Level 3 Sports Turf Maintenance course.
His passion for greenkeeping started at school with a period of work experience at Peterculter Golf Club. In 2010, having impressed his employers, Chris was taken on as a full-time apprentice and given the opportunity to study at Elmwood, now part of SRUC, Scotland’s Rural College.
The competition judges interviewed 29 entrants from across the UK, selecting six candidates to progress to the National Finals. The finalists, including Chris Watson, joined the judges for an informal dinner and the following day were provided with a written task to complete. Like the others Chris had another formal interview to face in front of a panel of four judges, representing both Golf Course machinery manufacturers Toro and BIGGA.
Chris, who would like to go on to become a Head Greenkeeper, said:
“The overall experience has been worthwhile and I have learned a huge amount. It was great to meet the other student greenkeepers and we hope to keep in contact. I would like to thank the lecturers at Elmwood, as they have been very supportive, as well as BIGGA and Toro.”
SRUC’s Greenkeeping and Golf Course Management Programme Manager at Elmwood, Michael Clark added:
“Chris has been a credit to his course and peers and has put in a huge amount of work and effort. It is a great opportunity for SRUC Elmwood Campus as the leading provider of greenkeeper training in Europe and Toro, the leading manufacturer of groundcare equipment, to come together and honour the future stars of the industry.”
