Aberdeen college shares SRUC campus

SRUC’s Craibstone Campus in Aberdeen is now home to an extended menagerie of unusual “livestock”. The result of a successful new partnership between SRUC and nearby Aberdeen College, a new home has been created for the College’s animal care students.

Snakes, ferrets, a giant rabbit and Shetland ponies have joined the usual cattle and sheep.

When the 200 plus SRUC students turned up for their new term they found 150 students from Aberdeen College had already settled in, sharing lecture rooms, libraries, recreation and other facilities. A new cafeteria and dining area has been opened to cope with the increased numbers.

While the Shetland ponies have their own paddocks most of the new Craibstone livestock is housed in specialist facilities on the SRUC campus which were refurbished by Aberdeen College. There is accommodation for a reptile vivarium, aquaria, an aviary and ‘ferret world’. Teaching space includes a dog grooming area and veterinary theatre.

Aberdeen College Principal Rob Wallen described the arrangement as ideal:

“This partnership allows us to deliver our animal care courses in an environment which can only benefit our students. The specialist facilities at Craibstone are excellent and our students will profit from mixing and studying with like-minded people with a shared interest. We hope that our students will in turn add a different dimension to the campus.”

SRUC Chief Executive and Principal Professor Bob Webb fully agreed:

“This partnership will enrich the student experience and creates a more vibrant and exciting academic community in the North East.”

Both college Principals believe there is capacity for further close co-operation. There are presently degree-link opportunities for animal care students to progress to the third year of an SRUC degree course in rural business management on completing their HND. Other joint working initiatives are being explored.
