Introduction to Soils

Soils as Living Systems

This resource will help you to appreciate soils as living systems; why they are different in different places and how important they are to all our lives.

You will find out about the properties and main uses of three of the important soils in Scotland and, if you are studying Higher Geography, it should help you to explore soils in a more interactive way.

The materials are audio-led and multimedia-rich and are presented by subject area and topic. To access the materials, please click on the image on the right.

Introduction to Soils is based on a set of soil posters, originally produced by The James Hutton Institute (JHI) and is a joint initiative between JHI and SRUC (Scotland's Rural College), two of the main land-based research providers for the Scottish Government.

The JHI and SAC share the objective of supporting rural communities in Scotland through improving wider public awareness and promoting sustainable uses of  natural resources.

Soil is one of the major components of these natural resources upon which we all depend.
